What are the changes for Russians who decide to apply for a Schengen visa in 2023?

In September, the EU terminated the conditions of the simplified visa regime with our country. In 2023, it became a problem for Russians to apply for a Schengen visa due to the political situation.

And here is a list of what has changed for us:

  1. The countries are closed. The Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Finland and Norway have banned Russians with tourist and business visas, as well as visas for participation in cultural and sporting events, from entering their territory.
  2. Prices have risen. Consular fee for Russian applicants increased from 35 to 80 euros
  3. Deadlines have been extended. The period for consideration of documents for a visa has been increased to 45 days.
  4. Urgent visas have been cancelled.
  5. Requirements have become tougher. For example, some countries require the presentation of an account with a European bank, the payment of a visa fee through foreign currency in foreign banks, or the presentation of a medical insurance policy of a foreign insurer. The issuance of multiple-entry visas for Russians has been reduced to a minimum.
  6. The days of stay have been shortened. Now it is very difficult to get a visa even for a period of half a year, not to mention annual multiple visas.
  7. Rejections have increased. Applicants are now being looked at more closely.
  8. Recording has become more difficult. Now, before submitting documents for consideration at the visa center, you need to register online, but for this you need to find a free slot for registration, and this is almost impossible to do.

Yes, the list is impressive. Perhaps the most unpleasant of all this is the period of visas issued. Now it is not easy to get even a six-month visa. Most often, they are issued for the duration of the trip (if at all).

But do not rush to despair, not everything is so hopeless, because ...

I have made detailed instructions from which you will learn how to get a Schengen in 2023, how much it costs, which country is more likely to get a visa, and which one can do it faster. After carefully reading it, you can decide whether the game is worth the candle ????

Who issues Schengen for Russians in 2023

Not issued by: Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Belgium, Finland, Malta, Liechtenstein, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Finland, Slovakia;

Issue, many refusals: Austria, Hungary, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, Sweden;

Issued without problems: Greece, Italy, Spain, France;

Life hack: this is not mentioned anywhere, but free slots for registration at the visa centers open on Monday morning, from about 7 to 11 am. It was thanks to this that I managed to catch an entry window for Greece. But I sat on Monday morning and updated the page with the calendar of entries every 5 minutes, when the slots opened, I found that in just 1 minute they were almost all occupied. This was my experience in September 2022: now, it seems to me, things are even worse, because there are even fewer places allocated.

Now let's look at the statistics for each country separately.

Austria (issued quickly, but single)

Official website of the visa application center in Austria

Hungary (issued quickly, but single)

Official website of the visa application center in Hungary

Where to apply: 22 cities, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ufa, Vladivostok, Krasnoyarsk.

Terms of receipt: from 14 days.
How much they issue: one-time, for the duration of the trip.

Greece (quickly, few refusals, but more often single entry visas)

Official website of the visa application center in Greece

When I applied in September 2022, I applied 5 days before departure, with fake documents - I had an air and hotel reservation that had expired by the time it all came to the hands of the consulate, but no one checked anything, they issued a visa, but only for the date of the trip (in my case it was only 6 days with a window of 2 weeks).

All I know is that in 2023 there are still few refusals, they apply for a visa quickly (I don’t know how, but I managed to get a Schengen visa in 3 days), the list of documents has not changed. Official sources say that the Greeks check the reservations, therefore, I do not recommend applying with fakes, as I did (I also bought insurance with this scam, where in case of refusal I will be refunded).

Germany (many failures, tougher requirements)

Official website of the visa application center in Germany

How often they refuse: there are many refusals. Mainly for men of mobilization age.

(Video) List of Requirements for Schengen Visa Application 2023 - Complete Guide Checklist

Additional requirements: an extract from the Bank of Europe, redeemed air tickets, insurance, paid accommodation.

Here's what I like: Germany is the first country in the European Union that said it would accept Russians who are escaping from mobilization, and after that ... it began to refuse visas to men from Russia. What is it, a PR move, or the inconsistency of local politicians?

Getting into Germany will be the hardest thing right now. In order to get a Schengen visa in 2023, you need an extract from a European bank, local insurance, as well as booking tickets and accommodation. Malta and Slovenia now have the same stringent requirements.

Spain (quickly, there is a chance to get a multivisa, but it is difficult to enroll)

How often they refuse: there are few failures.

Requirements: in order to get a Schengen visa to Spain, prepaid reservations are not required.

Italy (recommended, but difficult to enroll)

Official website of the visa application center in Italy

This is the most loyal country to us, but at the same time there are many who want to go there. My first Schengen in my life was a cartoon for half a year through France. Judging by the reviews of travelers, you need to constantly monitor when free slots open. They are sorted out immediately, some travelers use bots to search for free windows to apply, but even this does not help. So put in the search for a free place for at least a month.

Portugal (issued according to travel dates)

Where to apply. There are visa centers in the main cities of Russia.
How easy it is to sign up: Signing up is easy enough.
Price: Visa fee - 80 € (children 6-12 years old - 40 €, up to 6 years old - free of charge)⁣. Everyone pays a service fee - 30 €. In the regions - 34 €.
Terms of receipt: from 10 to 30 days.
How much they give out: more often they give out on travel dates.
How often they refuse: as usual.

How to get a Schengen in 2023: results

Where are you more likely to get a multiple entry visa?

The most likely to get a cartoon, a minimum of refusals and no requirements for paid bookings of tickets and hotels from France. In second place is Italy. The third is Spain. But the fat minus is that it is almost impossible to sign up there, you will have to wait a very long time.

Where is the fastest issue?

The fastest Schengen visa can be obtained in Greece. There you can catch free windows during the week, they make a visa in 3-5 days. But the fat minus is that they issue a multiple-entry visa only to those who already had such a visa issued by the Greek consulate. Also in Greece they may require a paid reservation (but they didn’t ask me).

In general, if all the conditions listed on the website of the visa center are met, then there will be no refusal. Refusals usually come to those who are in a high-risk area, like an expat or illegal, who do not have enough money in a bank account, a job, or other reasons to return to their country.

Italy, France, Spain, and Greece have remained loyal to us, but they used to issue long-term visas more easily: now there are problems with this. If you have experience, please share in the comments how you got the Schengen in 2023. Also tell me if you have any other information in addition to this instruction.

And happy travels!
